My Synopsis:Sophie is a young 20-something British single woman. She lives with her family, who treats her like a doormat. But then she gets the opportunity to take care of her Great Uncle Eric, where she just happens to find some papers that might make Sophie and all her relatives some major money (drilling shares). She needs to go to New York for a possible Nanny job and to track down her “antique relative”. The job doesn’t happen, but she gets to spend a week in New York with her best friend and act like Carrie Bradshaw. Her first night out is at a museum her friend works at, where she just happens to to rescue a rich, high society old woman, Matilda. And she just happens to meet Matilda’s grandson, Luke, a sought after rich bachelor. She spends Thanksgiving with Matilda’s family and even posses as a fake fiance for Luke for one day. It’s a Cinderella story in the making (Luke even brings back Sophie’s high-heal shoes that she abandons, twice). And she’s spoiled by them with clothes and a jewelry.
But alas, Sophie can only stay in New York for a week. She then goes back home, to her family that treats her like a doormat. And she spends a dull Christmas working and giving out gifts to family and friends. I don’t remember her receiving any gifts too. Matilda does want Sophie to look for a house in England, even though she doesn’t remember any of the names of the house, family, location in Cornwall, etc. And it just so happens that Sophie’s “antique relatives.” Luke comes to help, and just happens to have his wallet and phone stolen. And so the Cinderella roles are reversed. Sort of. She does buy him sneaker shoes and some hand-me-down clothes. And there is a good happily ever after ending.
My Thoughts:
This was sweet romance book. I loved Sophie and Luke. I thought it was cute the way Sophie used movies she’s watched and compared it with her life. Mostly the Carrie Bradshaw, Holly Golightly and Mystic Pizza references.
The ending was a little slow in coming. But when it did, I really liked it. Took them long enough to come to their senses. Good grief.
And this reminded me a little of the movie, Letters to Juliet (2010 film stars: Amanda Seyfried, Gael García Bernal, and Vanessa Redgrave). But in this case, the book’s heroine is English and the hero is a rich and posh New York lawyer. If you liked that movie, then you might like this I think.”

A Perfect Proposal Katie Fforde 9781846054495 Books Reviews
Have read many of Katie Fforde's books, but wish I'd saved my money on this one ~~ in spite of reviews, it was obviously written for an audience of very young girls or the simple-minded !! The "hero" Luke ~~ apart from being good-looking and rich ~~ a fact of which the reader is constantly reminded ~~ is spineless and stupid ~~ completely controlled by his grandmother and an older woman who works in his office ~~ it is obviously from the writer's introduction of that latter into the story just who is the "boss" in that particularly lawyer's office. The young heroine, Sophie is a child being sent on one errand or another throughout the book by anyone who happens to need or want her services. Really like Katie Fforde and look forward to reading other books by her in the future. For this one, it will go to the Friends of the Library donation box tomorrow !!!
This book seems never to end! It's all backwards and forwards about these two, frankly disinteresting, projects that the book could probably do without.
Sophie, despite the author clearly stating that she isn't stupid, actually does seem a bit stupid where it matters. When she's driving she says she takes a whole to figure out right and left, and she goes into complete dithers when she tries to make any meaningful decisions.
She's good at "useful" things like sewing, cooking and cleaning - meaning she's completely out of date. The constant emphasis on how poor she is is also pretty grating, as she seems to have plenty of money to buy things in NYC but not enough to eat meals.
She's as Mary-Sue as it's possible for a character to be, and the coincidental meeting between her and Luke is the most cliched "meet-cute" since I don't know when. I read about 60% of it, skipped to 80% and then couldn't read more than a few pages. I know how it ends - there was no real conflict except that Sophie was poor and Luke was rich and she is basically an idiot.
Girl meets boy, there's something keeping them apart, a misunderstanding occurs, there is a frisson between them and they love/hate one another. Along the way, other people in the story participate in either keep the couple apart or push them together What's not to love?
It made me want to be young again, on the brink of choosing my husband. It was frothy and fluffy, but had a real story and believable protagonists. It's what signed up for and I wasn't let down. This isn't my favorite book by Katie Fforde to date, but I liked it a lot. I'm happy I read it and would recommend it to rom com lovers
A Perfect Proposal, indeed. Sophie's self-esteem gets a boost when handsome and sweet (after a bit) Luke, seems to take a fancy to her, but when his corporate assistant, Ali, shows up, it's clear he thought of Sophie as just a distraction away from his REAL girlfriend. However, together, they solve a mystery very important to his grandmother, the very wealthy, Matilda, while it's Luke and Ali who aids in the quest Sophie's set upon to prove herself to her own family. Sophie tried hard not to fall in love with Luke, but the heart wants what the heart wants, doesn't it? During a wild Cornwall flood and a supposed kidnapping, Sophie finds out what Luke's heart wants.
Katie Fforde has the magical gift of engaging the reader from the first page, drawing you into the everyday lives of her characters, and keeping you there happily throughout almost 400 pages. That takes real skill. A Perfect Proposal was a good example of that skill. The story is pretty bland (not much happens plot-wise) and yet the heroine is engaging (if a bit young) and you find yourself rooting for her HEA. The supporting cast of characters was fun to read about, the hero was nice (though a bit bland and one dimensional,) and the settings were pleasant to read about. In all this was a fun, easy read. I'm not sure I'll remember it a few days from now but it was a very nice ride and I was sorry when I got to the last page. Can't ask for more than that!
