I find that what many of the reviewers of this novel find irritating or flaws, I find endearing. Too many characters, too long, too pedantic, the list goes on. I assume that perhaps I read too much into the structure of the novel, but just when it seems to become tedious, the author changes direction and entrances me with something apparently besides the point.

To begin with, this is a tale of two murders, several dysfunctional families, sexually disturbed individuals, academic research and the world of academia, and peripherally, police work, to cite a few examples. The initial portion of the book seems to be an introductory note to a history of dinosaurs Just when you are about to say enough, there is a murder and Anna, the enraged doctoral candidate is the linchpin to these two segments. We are then introduced to Soren, the "most perfect detective" who is anything but, on this case.

Let me say that I find the descriptions of academia mesmerizing and almost satirical. Anna's rage is never explained until the end of the book and this I find a cheat, in fact the last 60 pages or so is a cheat. That being said, the book is well worth your time and as one reviewer has remarked, are there any well-adjusted, happy people in Gazan's world? I leave it to readers' own particular tastes to judge this book, since it is unorthodox and quirky in its structure.

I sense that a sequel is on the horizon if only to pursue the matter of Anna's relationship to Soren which no doubt will be convoluted.

This was highly recommended, and I enjoyed it -- but not enough to rank it as highly as others have. It is certainly one of the most unusual mysteries I've ever read, and that's a plus. I also found that once the necessary beginning chapters were over the plot moved along and I found it hard to put down. I actually liked all the science, but I can understand that others might not -- perhaps a bit too much and too esoteric for many. All that's the good news. On the other hand. I found all the characters to be somewhere between mildly to hugely unpleasant. There are really three stories going on at the same time The main character, the cop, and the murdered professor and his colleagues. The main character claims to love her daughter more than anything, but mostly doesn't act like it. Yes, I know that single women have it hard, but she has a great support system and resents it. Grow up. One of the sub-plots is getting her story straightened out, and I found that mildly satisfactory. The cop has issues (don't they all) but I found him to be by far the most sympathetic. And ultimately all unresolved, perhaps lead-ins to a followup novel (which I would gladly read) The biology folks are simply strange. In a previous life I was a professor, and I'm well aware that many of them (us) are perhaps not as normal as should or could be, but these folks were simply caricatures. Maybe the Danes have a different set of silly personality defects, but somehow I doubt that they go this far. Some threads are left hanging. The main character thinks the murdered guy hates her, but his wife claims not. Not merely entirely explained by his condition. And finally (SPOILER ALERT) when the bad buy in a mystery appears only in the last part, I feel somehow cheated. Part of the fun of reading mysteries is placing bets on the likely culprits, and here it would have been impossible. Finally, is the state of funding for Danish science really as bad and political as portrayed here. Or is the author merely settling a grudge or two.
This book is in the form of a murder mystery but this is not an Agatha Christie style novel. (No criticism intended; I love Agatha.) If there is a single theme it is that truth is the end that justifies the pain of digging through the past. Just as the descent of birds reveals a truth, the descent of individual humans also reveal the truth.

Some found the biology a little too intense. I did not. I watch a good deal of science shows on television, specifically about extinct animals,p but that hardly makes me a scientist and I had no great difficulty following the gist of the arguments with the help of my dictionary. Some complain that there is too much back story. Again, I disagree. I think the stories of the characters is the cake, the murder mystery is the icing.

I thought the writing was good. I thought the characters were interesting and realistic if often times unpleasant. I thought the story itself was interesting. I do have a few quibbles but I will discuss them under the warning of

SPOILER ALERT!!!.

First, I don't understand the resolution regarding Dr. Freeman. He is a good red herring but why then does Anna feel the need to confront him? What was the purpose of that confrontation? Freeman is clearly a rectum (to use the biological term) but is he worse than the others? He suffered in his childhood as others had, he overcame that upbringing as well as many of the others, he might be a latent homosexual and pedophile but he never acts on those impulses, and he is stubborn and refuses to reject false scientific theory, despite the evidence, using ever more extreme rationalizations. He fits in with the general theme in that he is destroyed by his refusal to face the truth but even so, why must Anna do it? Why is he beyond redemption? Also, his fate is a loose end. Are we to assume suicide?

In defending her dissertation Anna makes a plea for truth in science and that is certainly timely given the corruption of our society by junk science. She makes some arguments for the cause of the corruption and seems to include the lack of ever more government funding. I would have preferred the inclusion of the corrupting influences of government funding, but I quibble and am, of course, messing in scientists' rice bowl. Still, it is an interesting omission given that Anna specifically warns about unconscious bias influencing results. Also interesting are Anna comments to the effect popular culture controversy overwhelms actual science in the media. I do not believe that she means this but her comments could be interpreted as we knuckle-draggers should leave science to the scientists, an interesting idea in a book designed for the general public which many find to be too scientific.

That being said, I greatly enjoyed this book and have recommended it to friends of a literary/scientific bent.
