Okay, this is the best book in the series so far. It was certainly a step up from the last one, with a much more intense story-line. In this installment, Livvy and Chris leave the D.C. area and go to the moon. This is a nice change of pace, and the use of the moon environment and the tech from the "Longevity" world works very well together. Great fun! Note to the author...either you have to make these longer, or you had better write a lot more of them! They go by too quickly.Tags : The Dog on the Moon (Longevity Law Enforcement) - Kindle edition by S.J. Hunter. Download it once and read it on your Kindle device, PC, phones or tablets. The Dog on the Moon
Longevity Law Enforcement
By S. J. Hunter
When I was growing up, I was an avid reader of science fiction. I stopped reading it when too many authors tried to produce carbon copies of Star Trek. "Beam me up Scotty," or aliens possession of different members of the crew, soon becomes tiring when I simply wanted to be entertained. The first thing that caught my attention with Dog on the Moon was the cover, so I decided to give it a read and perhaps rediscover some of the magic of my youth. Almost from the first page I was aware that this was a book with a plot. Not only was there a plot filled with interesting characters, the book said some profound things worth contemplating.
If I were to attempt to sum this book up in one sentence, I would probably say `The perception of something is almost as powerful as the events themselves.' This book presents a world set slightly in the future where people perceive their leaders as dishonest, self-serving, and dangerous. Longevity Law Enforcement is responsible for enforcing the laws that govern longevity and physical enhancement, qualities that are enjoyed by the rich and powerful, but not readily available to the general population. Hunter leads the reader on a winding trail through the world she has created, making you wonder if it is not an accurate picture of our future. Entertaining, though provoking, and insightful is a combination that is hard to beat. I highly recommend this book.
I received a copy of this book in exchange for an impartial review
Having read and raved about both Longevity and The Burning Rivers (the previous books in this trilogy), I was expecting this to be excellent. I wasn't prepared to be blown out of my chair by the pace of the story and the audacity of it's concept! S.J. Hunter has really kicked it up a gear, and finished off the trilogy in brilliant style.
In quality SF such as this, the emphasis is on how human (and canine!) characters react against a backdrop of technological change, whilst re-defining and re-affirming their humanity. It should ultimately be uplifting and optimistic, and this book is just that.
Another mark of quality writing in any field is that a good proportion of the story is told by what is subtly implied rather than explicitly stated, and this book is shot through with tantalising glimpses of side-plots which could be expanded into stories in their own right. The author has created that rare thing, a fully developed and self-sustaining universe crying out to be explored.
My personal marker of a great book is that I'm still hungry for more when I get to the end, and that's how I felt at the end of this book. If you're like me, you have a list of favourite books that you re-read when you don't want to start a new one, knowing that you'll get something new out of them each time - these books are now firmly on that list for me.
I am hoping that the LLE series does not end with this book. I did not want the story to end. S.J. Hunter, please keep the characters alive! I am not a Sci Fi fan per se, but the political and legal implications of what we could be facing someday is spell binding!
What can I say? ... I have read the three books in the LLE series and I have enjoyed each one. I just hope that there are more where these came from.
I have read all 3 of the Longevity books, and this one is by far the best--most imaginative, most complicated, and with a very satisfying ending. Hunter writes with more and more confidence and skill; I hope that the series doesn't end here--the characters have become friends. I especially like the timeline at the end, which puts all 3 books into an overlapping perspective and details some of the history for the reader. Well done!
I normally read war history and action war fiction but never sci fi. I am attracted to books with dogs and this one fit the bill. It is very fast paced with an excellent plot and an easy read. The sci fi never got in the way, at least for me, because the plot was grounded in everyday life.
The only issue wirth this book was that I didn't understand the timeline until well into the book. There is a timeline in the back of the book that should be read first. Despite that, I thoroughly enjoyed the book and Hunter's writing. This is the third book in the trilogy and I enjoyed the others just as much.
This is the second novel I have read in the Longevity Law Enforcement world, and I enjoyed it immensely. However 5 stars I only give to novels that have something more, a wow factor that makes me want to start reading from the beginning again, straight away. Frank Herbert's Dune had that wow factor, so my benchmark is pretty high. That said, The Dog on the Moon is very good and I'd recommend it to any sci-fi fan.
